and subsequently taken over by the Chamber of Commerce to pro- vide a testimonial to the officers and crew in recognition of
the gallantry and devotion they displayed in resisting the
pirates.
Out of this fund Captain Fetherell was presented with
a gold watch (I am informed that he would accept no money),
while a sum of $700 was sent to Mrs. Evans for her immediate
wants, and $300 to the widow of L. J. Silva.

Captain Wetherell is, I regret to state, not so
fortunately placed. He is in rather straitened circumstances,
and as his health has suffered from his recent experiences I
have granted him an indulgence passage to England, 2nd class
P.& 0. Intermediate. He has, I fear, little prospect of obtain
ing employment from Chinese shipowners on the Coast, who are
unable to appreciate western conceptions of duty, and dis-
approve of his action in resisting the attack on the ship
a entrusted to his charge. I enclose copies of report by the
A
Harbour Mester on Captain Wetherell's qualifications and record
of service. In the circumstances I should esteem it a favour
if he could obtain assistance in retting employment, and in the
event of one of the appointments referred to by Commander
Beckwith or of a post as Assistant Marine Surveyor being vacant,
I would be glad if his application should obtain your sympathe-
tic consideration.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
